A proper undercarriage overhaul is certainly not limited to merely disassembling & assembling of the undercarriage components. During an undercarriage overhaul we also pay a lot of attention to the fastening parts. The bolts and threads must be in excellent condition to prevent undercarriage components from loosening afterwards. We also examine the functionality of the lubrication and tensioning devices and give them a thorough check-up.

Grease/tensioner inspection

Since the tracks are disassembled during the undercarriage overhaul anyway, we take the opportunity to inspect the grease adjusters thoroughly. In that process, we systematically renew the seals of the grease adjusters. 

While the seals are being renewed, we examine the condition of the cylinders and pistons. The various parts are examined for the possible presence of superficial damage such as rust spots and burrs. We always recommend renewing the cylinder and/or piston if there is any doubt about their reusability.

A broken spring during an undercarriage overhaul

It is only when the track chains of the undercarriage are disassembled that eventual problems at the tensioning devices surface. A broken spring can be identified as a single crack on one of the coils to even multiple breaks along the entire length of the spring. 

Depending on the situation, during the undercarriage overhaul, the tensioning devices are either completely renewed or only the springs are renewed (with recovery of the old cylinder, threaded rod,…). 

In a situation where only the spring is renewed, due attention should be paid to safety: even if the spring of a tensioning device is broken, a preload is still present. This preload can reach values of up to several tons! Never try to loosen a spring without specialized tools! So always rely on our expertise for this. 

It goes without saying that these problems at the level of the tensioning devices usually only come to light as soon as the track chains are opened. It is of the utmost importance to react quickly so that the undercarriage overhaul can be carried out quickly and according to plan.
