How do I replace a sprocket on my excavator?

To learn how to renew a sprocket, you can watch the following video or follow “step-by-step plan – How do I replace a sprocket on my excavator?” below the video.

Roadmap – How do I replace a sprocket on my excavator?

Preparation:

  • Beforehand, clean the undercarriage of the machine using a pressure washer.
  • Place the machine on a flat and stable surface.

Lift the machine:

Use a jack to lift the machine. If it is an excavator, the machine can be pushed up with the boom.

Remove the track chains or rubber tracks:

Then remove the rubber track or steel chain. Follow this link to learn more about how to remove rubber tracks. Next, place sufficiently sturdy supports under the machine. If the machine is sufficiently lifted and stable, you can start replacing the sprockets.

Disassemble the sprocket:

  • Using a socket wrench, remove the bolts holding the sprocket to the gearbox (final drive).
  • Once the bolts are removed, the sprocket can usually be removed easily. If the sprocket does not come off, gently hit the sprocket with a hammer; do not hit the sprocket on the same spot, but hit it in a crosswise fashion.

Before installing the new sprockets:

  • Remove all rust and dirt with a wire brush
  • Clean all threads using a machine tap.
  • Use new bolts or put the old bolts through a thread cutting die.
  • Examine the final drive’s mounting flange: run your finger along the contact surfaces to feel for burrs. Any deformations on the surfaces must be removed.
  • Clean and degrease the sprocket mounting ring / hub.

Mounting and installing the new sprocket:

  • If all contact surfaces are clean, you can proceed to installing the sprocket.
  • Position the new sprocket on the driving motor and make sure the bolt holes are aligned.
  • Install the bolts hand-tight into the sprocket.

Tighten the sprocketbolts:

  • Using an impact wrench, tighten the bolts crosswise to ensure even fastening.
  • Check the tightening torques using a torque wrench. Click here to find out which tightening torque is best to use for fastening the undercarriage components.
